Nahanni Butte (Tthenaago – "strong rock") is a picturesque Slavey Dene community with log houses located at the confluence of the South Nahanni and Liard Rivers. The community suffered a devastating flood in 2012, causing evacuation of the residents, the majority of whom own their own homes. The economy is based on subsistence activities, with some opportunities for employment in community and Park services. Nahanni National Park visitors pass by the community as they complete canoeing or rafting excursions.
A year round access road from the Liard Highway leads to a landing where visitors must cross the Liard River by water taxi or a winter ice road. The Charles Yohin School offers K-10. Accommodation and groceries are available.
