Aklavik is located on the west side of the Mackenzie Delta, on the Peel Channel, accessible in summer only by air or boat, and in winter by ice road. A Gwich’in and Inuvialuit community with a stable growing population, Aklavik remains an excellent hunting and trapping area. In the early days of northern flying, Aklavik was one stop on the “polar route” to Russia. Roughly half the employment available is with community services. The community is 58 air km west of Inuvik, via Aklak Air or North-Wright Airways. Moose Kerr School offers K-12, and there is an Aurora College Community Learning Centre. Groceries are available, there’s a health centre and an RCMP detachment. For more information, visit the community site or the GNWT’s Bureau of Statistics page. Additional community information can also be found on the LGANT site: http://aklavik.lgant.ca.
