Job Information

The Hydrologist position is located in Yellowknife and reports to the Manager, Research and Studies. The Hydrologist is responsible for working with ENR divisions, GNWT departments, and external partners, including universities and interjurisdictional partners, to lead, plan, design and implement multiple and diverse hydrological research and monitoring programs to improve NWT water resource management.  The Hydrologist will produce scientifically defensible information required for the assessment and management of northern water resources; interpret, analyze, synthesize and report on collected hydrological information; and verify, compile, organize and manage hydrological data in regional and national databases to ensure data are current and correct for use by internal and external clients.

The Hydrologist will act as a departmental representative with internal and external stakeholders on the subject of hydrology, and represent the division/department on a variety of internal and external boards and at public and community meetings. The Hydrologist will act as a senior technical advisor on hydrology issues to GNWT senior management responsible for the negotiation and implementation of transboundary water management agreements and generally make recommendations that support the interests of Northerners with regard to NWT water management.

Typically the above qualification would be attained by a Master’s Degree in environmental science or resource management, with at least two years progressive experience in environmental management, planning and/or program delivery. Relevant experience in an NWT setting with both government and private industry are an asset.
