Department Information

The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) provides the residents of the Northwest Territories with access to quality programs, services and support to assist them in making informed and productive choices for themselves and their families with regard to education, training, careers, employment and labour, child development, languages, culture and heritage.

Job Information

Reporting to the Director of the HWSS division and located in Yellowknife, the Mental Health Coordinator is responsible for providing mental health expertise, leadership, planning, training and support services for education staff in NWT schools (ie.School-based Support Teams), including occasional crisis intervention management, especially related to students with complex needs. The Mental Health Coordinator works in collaboration with other Territorial Based Support Team members, education body staff, Health and Social Services staff, and other relevant partners to problem solve challenges arising in schools and provide direction from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The position is responsible for managing, supporting, promoting and actively encouraging: student-centered/ family-centered, culture-based, process-orientated, research-based, interactive, experiential, competency-based, cognitively challenging, inclusive education in accordance with the NWT Education Act; the NWT Official Languages Act; the NWT Day Care Act, regulations, ECE Departmental philosophies, guidelines, Frameworks and Action Plans, Ministerial Directives, curricula, and inter-jurisdictional initiatives.
The Mental Health Coordinator works closely with the HWSS divisional staff and participates in relevant Education Renewal working groups in a solution-focused, interdisciplinary team environment. Regular collaboration with the Department of Health and Social Services (HSS), the NWT Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA), and education staff will be required.

The Mental Health Coordinator is responsible for a budget of +/- $200,000 for the delivery of services to schools including training, resource development and in-person support.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

A Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Counselling, Educational Psychology, or Education with a specialization in Counselling, with 3 years of relevant experience working with children and youth, as well as holding a professional qualification as a Certified Canadian Counsellor. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in their field within a northern context and/or in a school setting, as well as working in interdisciplinary teams.
Proficiency of the incumbent in at least one NWT Indigenous language and/or French would be an asset.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $49.02 per hour to $58.53 per hour (approximately $95,589 - $114,134) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
