Department Information

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority –Stanton Territorial Hospital (NTHSSA)  is offering challenging nursing work and work life balance.  Join our health care team as a Registered Nurse (RN).   Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is a 100 in-patient bed accredited facility, located in Yellowknife Northwest Territories (NWT). This is an exciting time to work at Stanton as the hospital is undergoing  major redevelopment with a new $350 million facility being built with operations scheduled to transition into the new facility in 2019, for more information on the redevelopment visit www.stantonrenewal.ca. STH is the referral center for approximately 43,000 NWT residents and 5,900 residents from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. STH provides health care services to adults and children on an inpatient/outpatient and outreach basis in order to restore health with dignity.  STH maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property, recognizing the health hazards associated with tobacco in the workplace, both to smokers and non-smokers alike.  Therefore, Stanton maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property.

 

Job Information

The RN, ECU reports directly to the Manager Mental Health Services & Extended Care Unit, and is clinically supervised by the Clinical Coordinator, ECU. The Extended Care RN is accountable for the overall nursing care of all residents/patient within the Unit and works on a rotational 12 hour shift schedule.

 

There is only one RN scheduled to work on ECU per shift (in conjunction with an LPN and/or Nursing Aide), therefore the RN is required to act within the full scope of an RN and must exercise critical thinking and sound decision making skills. Limited support from Physicians is available to ECU with the physician making one visit to the unit per week, and otherwise being on-call.

 

The RN, ECU is responsible for triaging patients who need to see the physician during their weekly visit and making the decision on whether phoning a physician outside their visit is necessary.

 

The ECU provides the highest and most challenging level of continuing care (Level 5) to individuals with severe, chronic  disabilities that have resulted in physical frailty and/ or cognitive impairment, and require professional nursing care and continuing medical supervision 24 hours per day/7 days per week on a locked and secure unit.

Individuals are placed in the ECU through the Territorial Advisory Committee (TAC). The ECU at STH provides care to the most complex Long Term Care Clients in the NWT, and the only Level 5 facility in the NWT.

Typically. the above qualifications would be attained by:

 

Through the successful completion of a Bachelor of Nursing Degree. Previous experience in Long Term Care is an asset. Successful incumbent must be eligible for current registration with RNANT/NU.

Registrations

Eligible for current registration/certification with Registered Nursed Association of Northwest Territories and Nunavut (RNATNT/NU) is mandatory for this position.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $42.75 per hour (approximately $83,363 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
