About the Job

Limited Competition

This Job Opening is limited to employees with the GNWT/WSCC in indeterminate and term positions.

Department Information

Environment and Natural Resources actively collaborates to protect, manage and restore ecosystem health, promote environmental stewardship and support the wise use of natural resources for the benefit of ecosystems, which include the people of the Northwest Territories.

Job Information

Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Manager, Public Affairs and Communications, this position provides advice to, and coordinates activities for, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR).

The programs and services of the Department are highly visible and directly affect the lives and public safety of Northerners. Issues addressed by the Department can be controversial—for example, resource management, environmental assessment, transboundary water issues—and sometimes international in their effect, in areas such as resource management and climate change.

The Department must communicate with diverse audiences and different language groups, including individual harvesters, NWT Francophone residents and the European Economic Area. Diverse and vocal groups, some of whom are unfamiliar with the Northwest Territories (NWT) (including its people, culture and environment), scrutinize the activities of the Department and the position must balance pro-active French language service delivery with website planning and product development.

The Communications Planning Coordinator provides, in accordance with the GNWT Standards for French Communications and Services, advice regarding French language service, web planning and product development support and advice to communications colleagues, senior management, managers and staff within ENR (including departmental Points of Public Service) on matters which can significantly affect the Department's image in the public eye and within government.

The incumbent ensures the Department's English and French web and social media sites are up-to-date, relevant, meet GNWT standards and protocols, and are viewed as useful and practical tools for clients, residents and visitors to the sites.

The Communications Planning Coordinator coordinates graphics design/layout and print services for various types of communications products including brochures, ads, reports, newsletters, posters, presentations, computer graphics, web pages, videos and other materials (in French, English and other NWT official languages as required).

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration or a related field, supplemented by 2 years of experience in the communications/public relations field that includes project development, and web site content development and maintenance; or
  • A relevant diploma supplemented by 4 years of experience the communications/public relations field that includes project development, and web site content development and maintenance.
