Environment and Natural Resources actively collaborates to protect, manage and restore ecosystem health, promote environmental stewardship and support the wise use of natural resources for the benefit of ecosystems, which include the people of the Northwest Territories.
Working in the Environmental Protection section, Environment Division, the Hazardous Waste Management Specialist reports to the Manager, Environmental Protection. The position is located in the department's headquarters in Yellowknife. Under the mandate of the NWT Environmental Protection Act, the incumbent is responsible for developing, revising, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs, standards and regulations related to industrial and hazardous waste management by the public and private sectors including the GNWT. The incumbent ensures that used oil and waste fuel is managed (e.g. storage, handling and disposal) in a consistent and environmentally sound manner as required by the Used Oil and Waste Fuel Management Regulations. As well, promotion of the department's position on environmental and chemical safety issues requires the incumbent to monitor waste management practices and develop training programs.
The incumbent is the department’s technical expert in industrial and hazardous waste management. He/she provides technical reviews of submissions and proposals for industrial and hazardous waste management for all sectors (industrial, municipal, commercial, public and private) to ensure that the department's environmental management mandate is effectively maintained. There is often a need to work concurrently on several projects of varying size. The Specialist frequently represents the department or government in industry or public forums and is regularly called upon to make decisions on hazardous waste management in the absence of a regulatory framework and infrastructure for hazardous waste management.
The incumbent is appointed as an Inspector under the Environmental Protection Act and provides advice and assistance to regional and field staff throughout the Northwest Territories and advises and assists GNWT headquarters on environmental management issues as they pertain to waste management.
The above qualifications would be attained by A Bachelor’s Degree in a science discipline or a relevant engineering degree, with at least three years’ experience in hazardous waste management.

Transfer Assignments may be considered.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The salary for this position starts at $49.02 per hour (approximately $95,589 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
