Environment and Natural Resources actively collaborates to protect, manage and restore ecosystem health, promote environmental stewardship and support the wise use of natural resources for the benefit of ecosystems, which include the people of the Northwest Territories.


Job Information

This position is located in Yellowknife and reports to the Species at Risk Implementation Supervisor within the Species at Risk Secretariat in the Wildlife Division.

This position will be required to work independently and without direct supervision. The position will work closely with the Species at Risk Implementation Supervisor, the Wildlife Biologist (Species at Risk), departmental staff, co-management boards, and federal counterparts with responsibility for species at risk program implementation.

The incumbent is responsible for providing professional and technical assistance to the Conference of Management Authorities as established under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act, as well as to the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) as a management authority for species at risk to help fulfill its interdepartmental responsibilities (e.g. Inter-departmental Species at Risk Committee).

These activities include leading the collaborative development of management plans and recovery strategies as the ''preparer" as provided for in the Species at Risk (NWT) Act; and drafting, editing, and reviewing meeting materials, briefing materials and decision papers; and coordinating five to eight major interagency meetings per year along with coordinating section 35 consultation, public engagement and GNWT inter-departmental engagement.

The incumbent is also solely responsible for administering and implementing the NWT Species at Risk Stewardship Program in accordance with GNWT policies and procedures for grant and contribution programs. This includes managing a budget of $30,000, coordinating advertising and leading meetings of the Stewardship sub-committee of the Conference of Management Authorities.

The quality and quantity of information provided by the incumbent will be critical to the success of effective management of species at risk in the NWT which will, in turn, have an impact on effective co-management processes in the NWT.

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are most commonly obtained through the acquisition of a graduate degree (MSc) in one of the natural science disciplines - Biology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences or Resource Management, supplemented with two (2) years of directly related experience in resource management.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $44.75 per hour (approximately $69,811 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450 prorated.
